Still A Smart Draft Day Trade?

With Runyan and Thomas both unlikely to be back next season, would the Eagles have been better served keeping their first round draft pick instead of trading the pick to the Panthers? The Panthers used the 19th pick to select Offensive Tackle Jeff Otah.

Sure the Eagles got a first round pick in this year's draft, plus a 2nd and 4th rounder in the current draft. But with the 1st rounder looking to be a bottom of the round pick, would the Eagles smartest move of been selecting Otah for themselves? Will they find a better OT this time around? They had better hope so.

The 2nd and 4th round picks for the Eagles ended up being Trevor Laws and Mike McGlynn. Laws is having a very queit rookie season, collecting only 9 tackles in 12 games. He has also failed to register a sack. McGlynn was only able to secure a spot on the Eagles practice squad.

Otah has battled through injuries this season, but has still managed to start 8 games for the 9-3 Panthers. The Panthers also carry the NFL's 7th ranked rushing offense...kudos to the OL.

Maybe things were bounce the Eagles way and this year's draft will yield the OT of the future. Kolb and Westbrook better hope so!

The second round pick. You have to look at the big picture. Trevor Laws was taken with our first pick in the second round when both he and Desean Jackson were on the board.

So... I think it's fair to say that if we had only one second round pick and both guys were there we would have picked Laws. Luckily, we had the second pick so we got Jackson.

So look at it this way, would you prefer Otah/Laws or Laws/Jackson?

I'll take the latter, which happened because of the trade.

PLus, you simply can't evaluate this trade until you see what the Eagles do with the Panthers first round pick this year. That will be the key. If that is a good pick, then the trade was a homerun IMO. If not, then there will certainly be some second guessing.

Good points anonymous...Im very curious to see how the Eagles approach the next draft. We have so many positions in question...safety, it would be nice to make the 1-2 punch at the RB spot, TE (too bad this will def be overlooked), and the OL positions...So keep your fingers crossed

All good OL will be gone by 20th pick. If Eagles decide to use 1st rouders they can hope to pick Safety and RB in late 1st round.
Or they can trade up with 2 1st rounders and get OT in top 10.
